Many early engravers came from a goldsmithing background. The first and biggest interval of the engraving was from about 1470 to 1530, with such masters as Martin Schongauer, Direct CNC Albrecht Dürer, and Lucas van Leiden. Normally, copper or zinc plates are used as a surface, and the incisions are created by etching, engraving, drypoint, aquatint or mezzotint. To print an intaglio plate the surface is roofed in thick ink and then rubbed with tarlatan cloth to remove a lot of the excess.
